Interview with Kris Roe, lead singer and guitarist of The Ataris.
Friday, June 25th. Chain Reaction, Anaheim, CA.
Q: How was it working with Joey Cape (Lagwagon singer) on producing “Blue Skies, Broken Hearts, Next 12 Exits…”?
A: “It was awesome! He became a really good friend and kinda like a father figure. He also had a lot of creative ideas.”
Q: Do you guys see your music changing in anyway on the next album? If so, how?:
A: “Yeah totally. We continue to be influenced by so many other bands and even other types of music.”
Q: What is your favorite song to play at shows?
A: “Your Boyfriend Sucks” and “San Dimas High School Football Rules”
Q: What is your favorite band of all time?
A: “There are like 4 bands that are so awesome and like they all stick out in my mind. A band called Built to Spill and one of there album names is “Perfect From Now On.” Another band is called Mineral and there album is called “Art of Failing.” Of course Jawbreaker, and another band called Hayden and there album is called “Closer I Get.” They are all great bands.
A: “A lot of like The Descendents, The Ramones, and Jawbreaker.”
Q: Kung Fu Records or Fat Wreck Chords?
A: “We like em both. They are both cool. But let’s just put it this way. If not for Kung Fu records, I wouldn’t have moved to California. Also, they allowed us to play our music. If not for Fat Wreck Chords, The Ataris wouldn’t have escalated into what we are now.”
Q: What is your opinion of the radio?
A: “I like the radio. I just don’t like a lot of the bands that come out on the radio and do it just for the money. I like the fact of knowing friends like Blink 182 and MxPx are making it on the radio.”
Q: Relationship Statuses for all members of the band?
A: (laughs) As for myself, I have a girlfriend, Chris the drummer, uh kinda sorta, uh I dunno, Mike, well he is engaged…getting married, so he isn’t single (laughs), and Marco is single.”
Q: What kind of cars do you guys all drive?
A: “I don’t drive. But I do have a Dino Beach Cruiser which is pretty cool (laughs). Chris has a Camaro that he bought and his folks paid for some of it. Marco drives the tour van and some other cars. Oh and Mike has a van too.”
Q: When did you first begin playing guitar?
A: “When I was 10. So like, 12 years. I got my first guitar though when I was like 2.”
Q: What is your favorite food?
A: (thinks long) “Mexican food.”
Q: What is your favorite color?
Q: How old are all of you guys?
A: ” I am 22, Chris just turned 21 on March 28th, Marco is 28, and Mike is 26.”
Q: What is your favorite movie?
A: “Uh….uh…(thinks for like a really long time) Can we come back to that?”
Q: What is the last movie you saw?
A: “Star Wars. It was okay.”
Q: Favorite actor and actress?
A: “I dunno about my favorite actor, but my favorite actress WAS Claire Danes for like a long time, but now she is my Ex- favorite Actress. (Goes on to tell the story of why he doesn’t like Claire Danes. Email me if you really are dying to know!)
Q: What is your favorite city to play in?
A: “Phoenix, Arizona. It’s cool cuz like all the kids at those shows like sing louder then us and all you hear are there voices over ours. It’s the best feeling.”
Q: Where do you get the inspiration for the songs you write?
A: “Basically different relationships I have been in or like just different experiences.”
Q: If you weren’t in a band right now, what would you be doing?
A: “Photography full time probably. It’d be cool to take pics of art stuff. I took all the pics in the album cover of “Blue Skies.” Or maybe write a book and stuff. (Goes on to joke about his answers)
Q: Who is the little girl in the picture in the album cover?
A: “That’s my daughter.”

A: “I like to write songs, photograph stuff, and work on making the band better.”
Q: Where do you guys live?
A: “Santa Barbara, CA, but I am originally from Indiana.”
Q: What is your prediction for the band in 5 years?
A: “Besides going off a cliff in our tour van probably (laughs), naw, I’ll still be writing songs, staying true to ourselves and our music and our band.”
Q: If trapped on a desert island, what are 3 things you would bring?
A: “Girl, guitar, and uh a lifetime supply of food.” (goes on to joke)
Q: Summer or winter time?
A: “Winter. Cuz you can bundle up in the winter, but in the summer you can’t like seem to get right…ya know?”
Q: How did the name The Ataris originate?
A: “I used to collect old Ataris games. I had like so many too. Then like I had a house fire and they all like got burned. I will never buy another Atari game either.”
Q: Other band names you thought of?
A: “We were once called The Methadones but it was for like a short while on one demo tape.” (If you wanna know why they changed the name email me)
