The Whyioughtas

Interview with XjonathanX (singer) of The Whyioughtas on October 21st, 1999 by Josh Stern.

What is your role in the Whyioughtas?

I sing, play bass, and bitch a whole lot…

How many recordings do you have? What is your favorite?

If you count our demo, right now we have 5. A 5 song demo, A 4 song 7inch, A 12 song Self Released CD, Rockin in the Early year, a 5 song split wiht Nothing Substantial On Springman Records called So What, and a previously unlreleased cover of Poison’s Fallen Angel that were trying to get out…
As far as favorites go, recording wise defitely the posioncover. For some reason we got it to sound really good. Kinda sucks that it’s not even our song and it sounds better then anything else we’ve recorded… Of our stuff though, i dunno, it’s kind ahard to picka favorite, I like our older stuff but I really like the way our new stuff, both on the split and unrecorded, is sounding…

I understand you guys just got back from a US tour… who were you touring with and how was it?

It was amazing, over the summer, we pretty much hit up a full US tour with the exception of the north western states and places like kansas and North Dakota… We didn’t really tour with anyone in particular, we played some dates on the 1999 Vans Warped tour in Texas adn California and did some smaller shows on the way back. We also played a few shows with bigwig in New York and New Jersey and stayed wiht them fro liek a week so that was cool too… Touring is pretty much the only thing we want to do with our lives, it’s the best. So if anyone knows a booking agent…:)

Is there anything really funny or cool that happened that you can share with us?

There’s so much stuff, not a lot of which I can share, but most of it revolves around Mark “Wonka” Cohen and an inability to control his bodily functions… Especially in dallas before we played main stage at warped..

I saw you guys on MTV’s Say What Karaoke… wearing your shirts… thats pretty cool that you guy free promotion to a few million people.

Yeah definitely… We were on tour up there, and and a day off so we figured we’d walk around New York and check out Times Square. While we were there they were filming Say What Kareoke Videos and asked us if we wanted to do it. We just couldn’t turn down the chance to have our name seen by millions and instantly become sellouts to everyone? 🙂

Do you like Britney Spears?

Musically, it’s not really my thing, although Poor Bouyancy from Austria Does a crazy rad cover of that Baby Baby song… On a personal level, I’m sure she’s a lovely girl, and if she ever wanted to hang out or something, I think I could handle that…

If you could go on tour with any two bands who would they be?

Such a tough call, we’ve met so many rad bands… I guess the dream tour for me would be with Bouncing Souls and Bigwig. We hung out with the Souls a bit on tour and they are just rad guys and Bigwig totally hooked us up when our tour fell through and are just sweet boys. Not to mention both bands are freaking amazing…

How did you guys meet?

We were all in other bands like when we were 16 and stuff, there’s not much to do in lakeland, and our bands would always do shows togteher. When stuff fell apart in our other bands we just kinda got together to see how things would work. It’s been a few years and we haven’t killed each other yet so I guess we’re doing alright…

What’s next for WiO… another tour or are you guys gonna hit the studio?

We are constantly looking to tour. We’re going back to texas in december and planning some east coast stuff possibly in february as well as another full US Tour this summer if everything works out. In the mean time we’re writing a lot of new material and recording is definitely in the works…

What is your favorite band?

I can’t even answer that. I doubt I could even give my favorite 10 bands. there are just so many amazing bands out there. Off the top of my head I’d say Propagandhi, Bigwig, The Bouncing Souls, Teen Idols, Midget Fanclub, and Midtown are really rockin my world right now…

When you arent busy with the band what are you doing… like in your spare time?

I dunno, work a whole lot. Bills suck. Other then that which isn’t much, I try to go to as many shows as I can, I’m involved with a food not bombs type of organization in lakeland, and do all the usual stuff like skate, hang out, chill and all that good stuff. One day when we’re big rockers I’ll be able to quit working and actually have a life and possibly have something more interestin to say…

When can we expect a new record from you guys?

We’re planning on recording in spring and seeing what happens with that. I don’t really think we’ll release another full length record until possibly sometime after next summer though but I’m sure we’ll have a few more things out before then. Maybe some split 7″‘s or an ep or two, I dunno We’ll have to see…

Any last words or closing comments?

Yeah, mad props to you for the interview, and the rad site. it’s cool to see people coming up with new ways to support the scene and give bands exposure. All the people that fed us and gave us places to crash when we were on tour, you have no idea how much that helps and if a band ever asks if they can stay at your house, please let them…:) Anyone that comes to see us play our listens to our records and supports their scene in general. And big ups to the high five crew, keep representin, more football in the pit…

Thanks for the interview Jon
