Atom and His Package

On Sunday, November 28th, Kris received the interview back from Atom of Atom And His Package that we had written a few nights before.

Please state your name for the record Sir.
Atom Ray of Sunshine in my Momma’s life Goren.

And your packages name is?
Da Package.

In your own words, how would you describe your sound?
I guess I’d describe it as 80’s pop sounding stuff with punk as fuck lyrics that some people think are sometimes funny.

How many cds have you released?
3, as Atom and His Package. 1 as a part of band I was in called Fracture (not the industrial metal one).

Which is your favorite?
I like the newest one Making Love, on No Idea records the best, as I like the music the most on it. However, everyone thinks the “A Society of People Named Elihu” is funnier.

What is the message you are trying to get across with your music?
No message really… I enjoy doing it very much, and I love writing songs. I have strong opinions about lots of stuff, so that comes through a lot, but I don’t have some agenda with doing what I do. I enjoy it, thus I do it. It is not to spread the gospel of Jesus or anything.

How much would it cost for a package like yours?
Mine was pretty expensive, as it’s pretty fancy, but it’s less than an entire band’s instrument cost.

How many synthesizers do you take on tour?
1, and a backup. So, 2.

Why did you choose music over your Neuroscience?
Much much much more fun.

Do you feel all those years of schooling/college were a waste?
Absolutely not. At some point, I think that I will enjoy teaching (I’m certified to teach high school biology and chemistry), but right now I have the opportunity to do this, and I really love it. It’s not like I didn’t learn anything that I use at college… granted, I don’t use my Linear Algebra all that much… but you know… like I’ve learned to type really incoherently, and not be able to make a complete sentence, but still get my meaning across. Impressive, I know.

What is your career other than music?
Well… I don’t really have a job other than doing this right now, but I work really hard at this. I do all the booking, a good deal of the distribution, and I tour pretty much constantly, so I don’t really have time for a career or anything like that. I don’t want a career yet… man, I’m still a kid.

Are you married?

Do you feel lonely on tour?
Sometimes, but I have lots of friends all over the place from doing this so much, and I meet lots of really great people. The long car rides suck, but I don’t mind driving for a couple of hours and listening to music.

Does your package keep your company?
Not good company.

How long have you been fucking with your package?
Like 3 and 1/2 years.

What kind of music/bands did you listen to growing up?
EARLY: Duran Duran, J. Geils Band, The Clash, Public Image Limited
MID: Anthrax, Metallica, Overkill, Misfits, Minor Threat

If you could bestow a horrible disease upon someone who and what would it be?
It would be the restraining order disease, meaning the prick would blow up if s/he got within 1,000 km of me. I cannot name these people, so that when they blow up I will not be a suspect.

What is the strangest thing you have done for money?
Nothing too strange here. I ate a tablespoon of ketchup once for like $1. That was pretty dumb.

If we every met in person would you let us touch your package?
If it weren’t a pain in the ass to get to.

What is the most embarrassing thing that has happened in your musical career?
The band 10 Gun Sloop, that I played with shortly. We sucked.

Which hand do you prefer, right or left?
I like both of my hands…

About how long does it take to complete a song? (programming and writing and shit)
A while… although most people wouldn’t agree… the songs are real songs, just programmed into a synthesizer… they take just as long to write as normal band songs. Some come out quickly, and some take forever.

To follow the PIR tradition do you like Britney Spears?
I have actually never heard her, even though I know who she is. I doubt that I’d like her.

Atom And His Package

1) Have you ever had a flaming Homer? If not, would you like to try one?
I have not. It sounded rather disgusting from the episode of the Simpsons…. I have had a flaming Doc though

2) What are your 3 favorite websites?
I have no idea… my fantasty baseball league thing on yahoo is pretty often checked. has really awesome record reviews…

3) Were you the type of kid that you describe in ‘Punk Rock Academy’? Did people make fun of you? Did it bother you at the time?
I’m not quite sure what you mean about “the type of kid” described in Punk Rock Academy. I did have a hard time in high school, as I was in a school, which consisted mostly of jock pricks… and yes, I was given a hard time, though not as hard a time as some other. Kids can be very mean to each other.

4) What do you think of emo? Is going to be the new disco?
Emo? I don’t think about it very often… I don’t even know what the hell it is anymore. It used to be stuff like Embrace and Rites of Spring… then it was jazzy-fall on the floor stuff… and now it’s bad rock I guess… however… there are bands who do it well, and lots of bands who suck, as in most cases.

. 5) Speaking of emo, when was the last time you cried?
Hmm… not sure… probably about something I’d rather not share with you.

. 6) Do you have a girlfriend?
I have a ladyfriend… yep. and a dogfriend

7) Any pets?
Hey… I didn’t even see that question! Crazy ya ya. Yes… I have a big pet dog… named Books. She is sweet.

8) How do you feel about sampling? I mean, when someone like Will Smith or Kid Rock ruins a great song, does that bother you?
No… I don’t take it personally.. Some people use samples creatively, and some don’t… it doesn’t bother me though… I have the ability of thinking something sucks, and not letting it bother me, because usually,it’s not unavoidable.

9) How did you feel about Doctor Who sampling you?
Huh? Who’s that? Oh… the guy on I was flattered that he wanted to use something i made for a song… he gave me credit so I have no problem with it.

10) So, what’s up next for you? Touring, new record?
I am starting to play shows again more consistently… I play everywhere… and am writing new songs for a new full length record… there are two EPs due out before then though.

. 11) How are things over at File 13 going?
Good… we’re working on fall releases by the Lilys, National Skyline and Lenola… all of which I really like a lot

12) Who sucks the worst – N’SYNC, Kid Rock, Sugar Ray, or Eminem?
I know who they are, but am not really familiar with any of their music… I imagine that i wouldn’t really like any of them though.

13) Would you consider a waste of time?
I haven’t seen it… but it’s probably not a waste of time for everyone. Atom
